Well, I have survived a lot of winters in this part of the country (just east of Kansas City near the Missouri River), but this one takes the cake so far. I remember the winter of '62/'63, but don't think it was this intense - or maybe it is because I was in my early 20's then and past 65 now? Anyway, this too shall pass and I will be back to my war with moles before I know it. Hmm - any chance moles can freeze? I should be so lucky. This is a photo of me waiting for spring.

If you want your lawn to look like this
Today is March 8th and here in "fly over country" which is the Kansas Ctiy area for me it is time to apply crabgrass preventer and fertilizer. Crabgrass is very easy to prevent and difficult to eliminate once it germinates in our bluegrass/fescue lawns. I will apply this week for good control. Why this week? Because the Forsythia are just "crackin' color" and that for us is the indicator it is the perfect time for crabgrass prevention. You need to decide if you want to do any reseeding because most preventers of crabgrass seed germination will prevent any other seed from germinating, too. I choose to do reseeding in the fall which I believe is the best time for our part of the country so I will use a general purpose germination preventer.
