Today is March 8th and here in "fly over country" which is the Kansas Ctiy area for me it is time to apply crabgrass preventer and fertilizer. Crabgrass is very easy to prevent and difficult to eliminate once it germinates in our bluegrass/fescue lawns. I will apply this week for good control. Why this week? Because the Forsythia are just "crackin' color" and that for us is the indicator it is the perfect time for crabgrass prevention. You need to decide if you want to do any reseeding because most preventers of crabgrass seed germination will prevent any other seed from germinating, too. I choose to do reseeding in the fall which I believe is the best time for our part of the country so I will use a general purpose germination preventer.

Update - crabgrass preventer & fertilizer down when the forsythia were blooming - which is a perfect time for my part of the country. End of May I applied a Turf Builder type balanced fertilizer. June 8th I applied a liquid broad leaf weed killer. That should penetrate the weeds for two days, but we had an unexpected 1.5" rain next day at noon So we will see if it still works. My lawn has looked great all spring long as we have ample rains. I don't irrigate so we will see what the summer brings. This fall I will power rake (as I don't catch clippings) and over seed with some of the best turf type fescues to get away from bluegrass as it shuts down in the summer. Bosh |
