I love to garden, because.... it is good mental and physical therapy. I love to see plants grow and thrive. I like to share the beauty with others as we are on a highway and people can enjoy them from the road. It is also a challenge. I like to design my gardens. Also I like to put surprises in the gardens like a dancing girl in the pansies.

The Gardens by the Side of the Road/bazaars

Saturday, October 24, 2009, 02:00 PM EST [General]

The season for bazaars in our area has begun. Our church had one of the earliest. My husband and I made computer posters and put up everywhere we could think of. He made directional signs and put those up one the day. Then he took his wood carvings to sell. He made cookies from our generous supply of apples and I made scones to sell.

It is fun to see what everyone comes up with and people buy for Christmas presents and for holiday meals. Then of course they buy for themselves. People share what they have had in their gardens or picked wild. We bought homemade choke cherry syrup, home baked rye bread and cardamom bread and had a lunch of home made soup.

It is not easy these days for non-profit groups but this is one way to have a good time, get some homemade items and support our non-profit group.

You remind me of my wonderful mother-in-law! She is always on the go either in the garden, the kitchen, the church or the YMCA where she exercises 4 days a week at the young age of 80.

I'd be willing to try chokecherry syrup, as long as I knew it was sweet. And, miss the cardamom breadstuffs, since with St. Lucia's Day upcoming in December, it's an early morning scent you want on a cold winter morning for breakfast.

Yes, Jamie, I could feel the puckering in my mouth when you mentioned the too tart chokecherry!
Yes, nice tradition of St. Lucia.
