How can I keep grasshoppers from eating the buds and blooms on my roses?

They sure can munch away at everything!

You've a couple of options, all depending on your level of squirmishness, time deadline, or environmental consciousness.

1. You can cover your roses with a fine netting to prevent grasshoppers from having further contact.

2. You can catch the bugs and crush/cut/kill them, getting their overall numbers lower so their damage is at a tolerable level.

3. You can spray your roses with a garlic water mixture so the spray on the plants will deter their eating.

4. You could purchase Neem Oil or other anti-bug spray that has citrus oil or pyrethrin in it and spray your roses in an effort to deter grasshoppers.

5. You could spray with a chemical product that has acephate in it (like Isotox or an Orthene roses product). Keep in mind acephate will kill beneficial insects like bees and ladybugs, too. And, never spray acephate on open rose flowers as it will burn them.

6. You could try to locate some natural fungal spores that will slowly kill the grasshoppers, but this will take weeks to take effect.

I had a small grasshopper problem on some palms, and I chose to stalk out the bugs and crush them. It did take a couple days of attempts, as they'd jump away if I wasn't stealth in my approach.
