I am new to gardening and plants/flowers. My question is I have 3 trees in my front yard, and I was thinking about adding mulch around them to give the front yard a little more curb appeal. I heard from a neighbor that she was thinking she heard somewhere that some trees mulch actually hurts the trees and other trees love it. I was just checking. Is it ok to put mulch on any of your normal trees? The trees are numerous years old, maybe 20 years, about 4-5 stores tall. I don't want to do anything that could hurt the trees but I wanted to make sure before actually doing.
Thanks Chris |

Chris, Most all trees benefit from having mulch spread around their bases. The mulch keeps weeds and other competitors down, keeps the soil more evenly moist, keeps the soil around the majority of the roots at a cool, more even temperature and adds organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. Plus it looks good. Who could ask for anything more? Just be sure not to pile the mulch up around the trunk in a "mulch volcano", but rather away from the trunk by a few inches. I generally recommend a depth of 2-3 inches of mulch all around the tree, preferably in a circle out to the drip line. That may be too far for some folks, but research has shown that tree root density can be 4 times as great if a large mulch area is under the tree for several years. |
