I have had a peace lilly inside my living room for a few months now. It's been sitting by the window. I just discovered that it is harbouring little, tiny black flies. I have since then put it outdoors. I love the plant, what can I do to eliminate the problem? I also have an african violet in a self feeding pot in my bedroom, thats growing mold in the base pot :( Donna |

Donna,
Sounds like you may have fungus gnats around the peace lily. Overwatering and poor drainage can lead to the buildup of fungus gnats. So, providing adequate drainage is key. Also, try letting the soil dry out enough for the gnat larvae to die wil help control the adults. Fortunately peace lilies bounce back pretty well from drying out. If this doesn't work, you may have to discard the plant and replace it, being careful not to overwater in the future. Too much moisture may also be contributing to the mold on the african violet. Try letting it dry out a little more beteween waterings and see if that helps. Happy indoor gardening! Sarah L. Ivy |
