Around the world everyone is talking environmental issues and 'going green'. Natural organic gardening and landscaping are important parts of this movement. Some organic proponents only say to stop using the chemicals. Howard Garrett, in the new and updated Organic Manual, explains in detail what to do instead. This book will be available this month: http://www.dirtdoctor.com/store.php?type=1 |

That sounds great! I'm looking forward to seeing it. I have been gradually moving to organics. I wanted to be sure to build on success, and sometimes that takes some time! One of the key improvements was being told by an organic landscaper about NutriSmart and Green Chicken. Both are organic product based on chicken manure, but not nearly as stinky. I had farmed my small vegetable bed very intensely without putting enough back, and a couple of years ago, it dropped significantly in production. Over winter, I dug in quite a bit of both of these products, plus organic fertilizer, and allowed the garden to mellow. I planted early summer, and was astonished at the result. I've never had tomatoes so big, and my potatoes grew faster and healthier than ever. I've put a fresh batch into the kitchen garden this fall. One book that was really helpful to me was "Square Foot Gardening". I grew up thinking of gardening in large scale, not understanding the concept of growing what you needed to eat, and growing different plants over the seasons. This was a great first step. Another great inspiration? "In the French Kitchen Garden; The Joys of Cultivating a Potager".
