I posted a msg about cutting back my lilys and when to do so but I did have a type-o in my question. I didn't mean cutting black but just cutting back the folage. Do I just wait until it dies back by itself and then clean up?
Thanks...I learned a lot from your answer. Here is a sample of what I have grown this year. |

whoa, beautiful! That is a healthy cluster of Asiatic lilies blooming happily.
Don't cut back your lilies any time soon. When the flowers drop their petals, you'll see the young seed pods at the end of the flower stems. Snip off the young pods and nothing else. Leave the main stem, the leaves on the stem, and even the short stems that once held the flowers and seed pods. All are collecting energy from the sun and sending it to the bulb below ground and will continue to collect energy until they wither and the bulb goes dormant. Once the stems and leaves wither, cut the stem near the ground, mainly for tidiness. Some gardeners like to let the stems stand until winter knocks them down because they admire the silhouettes. Or they like to do garden cleanup in spring--sort of a ritual of preparing for the awakening. |
