I need inspiration! Looking for ideas for programs for our garden club relating to green (environmentally friendly) gardening?
Any ideas or links to resources? Thanks in advance! |

Here are a few topics for presentation to a garden club.
Building healthy soil. By keeping garden beds covered year round with mulch, using natural materials such as compost and shredded leaves that feed the soil.. Natural insect control (also known as integrated pest management or IPM). Using row covers as barriers to insects such as squash bugs and borers, Japanese beetles, carrot flies. Using a spray of dormant oil to smother aphids. Watering efficiently by using soaker hoses and drip irrigation Creating new garden beds without tilling or digging by cutting the grass or weeds low to the ground, then covering the bed-to-be with newspaper, laid in overlapping packets, covering the newspaper with mulch, .waiting for the grass or weeds to molder and then planting through the mulch and newspaper. You can search by keywords for more information about these topics, or find more at Rodale Press, which has been publishing for five decades about organic and green gardening. |

Have you checked with your local county extension office to see if they have experts who will come speak to your club? For our club, the local extension office sent someone to do a meeting on native plants and a workshop on building compost bins in your yard. You may be able to find someone who can speak on rainwater catchment, even find out if your extension service offers discounts on products such as composters or rainbarrels. Do you have a group that runs community gardens? They might be willing to send a representative. In my city, organic gardening stores are cropping up, and they have offered to come visit our club and let us know how their products work. Do you have any private or public gardens that have organic practices and might be willing to send a speaker for a small stipend. Are there any colleges in your area with horticultural departments or greenhouse programs? Have fun! |
