Does anyone have a project for building a vegetable garden that will keep deer, rabbits and other hungry critters out? I am a girl, so I need one that can be done without heavy lifting or using esoteric tools that I probably don't have! Help!

Have you tried MOTH FLAKES. or Citranella (sp)?

Thanks Tugfur, but, yes, I've tried those and wolf urine! Groundhogs and deer will be thwarted for 1 or 2 days and then it doesn't work. I need fencing of some - any experience with which fencing is the easiest to use and most effective?

For smaller critters I dug a small trench around my veggie Suzanne aka Buglady Zone 6

Great idea, buglady! And I think my dog and I can handle that project. Thanks!

I'm not sure how or why this works to keep the deer away but I do two things. I put used cat litter around plants I don't want the deer to eat and I hang the hair I gather from my brush on posts around the veggie garden and the deer stay out. We also hang a little hair on my mom's hollyhocks as the deer seem to regard them as some equalivant to a yummy diary queen treat for us.

Those actions do work - for a while. Sometimes the deer figure out what you're doing and ignore hair or cat litter. You may want to randomize your deterents to keep them guessing. I know one gardener who placed porous blocks at the corners of his garden and regularly pees on them. The deer hate it (of course, the neighbors might too). Fencing, objects in their line of sight, something that makes sound, and things that smell bad to deer are all good possibilities.

Have you tried an electric fence?

Along with the other recommendations here, I have also used Predator Urine hangings around such gardens with success. I get the urine from my local greenhouse, place some cotton balls or fabric into the little ornament looking hangable receptor, add some of the urine and hang them up. Usually four of them in various locations around the garden area. I have had success with them for two to three months depending on the weather, then they have to have more of the urine added to the ornament. It sounds gross I know, but nothing else would ever work for my cousin whom lives in the foothills. It will also work for rabbit problems I have found. Stan the Roseman |
