African violets (Saintpaulia) are picky about water on their leaves. They don't like cold water and the leaves will turn black if you get cold water on them. What I recommend is planting African violets in a pot with a decent amount of holes in the bottom and that has a fairly large saucer. Place tepid water in the saucer and let it soak upwards through capillary action. I also let the plants dry fairly well between waterings. Give that a try and let us know how it works.

African Violets leaves will also turn black if they are too close to drafty windows or in direct sun of such windows. The cold will cause the leaf or several leaves to die. The direct sunlight through a window can act almost like a magnifying glass and burn them, then they turn black and die. We bought some grow light shelves to keep our on and eliminated the above problems. We also use grates over watering tubs for them with water wicks from the african violet pots down into the water below. They can wick up what they need and not get overwatered. They can be very tempermental to be sure!
