Dormant roses

I had two roses shipped in from a Tenn nursery.  They were shipped dormant.  I got them in the ground and the nursery says it could take 3 to 6 weeks for them to show development.  My father in law says they are dead.  The nursery told me to do a scratch test on them, she said if the color is white or green I'm fine, but my father in law and mother in law is still saying dead.  Do I side with the nursery or my in laws.  Suggestions!

Hi Chuck,

Are any of the stems fleshy, and do you see green when you lightly scratch them? Also, do any of the buds look plump and fleshy? If you scratch and get nothing but brown, dry marks and the buds seem crumbly and dry, your roses are likely dead. If you see some green and buds that seem alive then no worries. Your plants are alive. I hope this helps!
