How do I grow a veggie winter garden in zone 7 ?

I have grown flowers for 15 years intensively, but now I want to grow a winter garden of lettuce etc. I went to our best local nursery and the gal there who is very experienced told me she has grown winter veggies VERY well here, but she lives in the country and has done it for so long , she doesn't really know how to tell a beginner what to do. It is hard for me to believe it grows here because we get frost, but, I don't understand freezing weather and winter gardens at all, I do have an area that is where it gets the most warm and I can grow summer corn there very very well. Would this be the best place to plant my winter veggies or would it be too hot> Thanks for any info, :) Wendy |

I'm in zone 7 too and cold frame gardening is the way to go if you want to grow winter greens. A good friend of mine has been growing lettuce, arugula, spinach, mizuna and other greens in her winter cold frame for years. She inspired me to build my own this fall. Place your cold frame in a sunny, protected spot (ours is against a stone wall), and double dig the soil at the base and amend with rich compost. It helps to have the soil in the frame stand a little below the soil line, so it's also useful to choose a well-drained spot. Here's a great how-to for building a cold frame: www.doityourself.com/stry/oldwindowuses Jessie
