Crabapple identification

Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 08:47 AM EST [General]

I am hoping to identify a crabapple tree that was incorrectly labeled at the nursery.  The tree has smooth, silver grey bark, produces white flowers and 2" yellow green apples.  Can anyone suggest a database I might search?

Oh, Patrice, you have a tall order there! Crabapples have literally THOUSANDS of different cultivars and varieties. That's really tough. What makes it easier for you is the yellow fruit, which narrows things down a lot. Still, without seeing the tree, I wouldn't even venture a guess. I wish I could point you to a one-stop-shop database or website, but I can't. Learn2Grow has a good plant database, but we're a tad weak on the number of crabapple cultivars so far. That'll improve. Search "Malus" and you'll get 17 pages of results: www.learn2grow.com/search-plants-for/q=m...

Good luck and let us know if you ID your tree.

Mark,

I was afraid that it would be a unsurmountable challange but thank you for your comments.
